Define Yourself

Besides being freestyle legends, what do Tommy Baker, Trikz, Goosebumps, and 6th Sense all have in common? Think about it for a second . . . each one of them were major pioneers and trendsetters in the freestyle world. This is no accident or strange coincidence; their skills, popularity, and success were the product of their originality. Each of them took the time to develop their own moves, their own styles, and through these efforts they defined themselves as leaders.

A lot of cats nowadays see videos on youtube and love to copy what they see move for move, combo for combo. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this when you are beginning. It’s a great way to gain a skill base and have somewhat of a teaching aid in learning how to do the basics. However once you get these basics down, if you really want to become a standout freestyler, and if you want to help keep the entire freestyle movement growing, you need to expand from the cookie-cutter moves. If you’re replicating a Motion Sickness freestyle to a “T” people are likely to forget you, and you probably won’t earn much respect in the freestyle world – especially from the people who created the moves and combos. Every week or so we’ll bring you videos of some live performances. Here’s one from the first Streetgodz competition. I was lucky enough to participate in it and meet all of the freestylers. There was a lot of talent there, but Blenda stood head and shoulders above the pack, giving flawless performances and showing unmatched versatility.

Years after people thought the Notic was dead this clip dropped out of nowhere starring David Dazzle. Dazzle showed his handles were still crisp and displayed some fresh moves all in his distinctive style. Meahwhile, newcomer 6th Sense jolted the freestyle world with his brand new approach to freestyling and rapid fire hands. All together this video was a great combination of old style meets new, and had ‘stylers everywhere picking up some fresh moves and ideas.

At freestylecentral.com we’ll show love to any type of freestyle group or performer that grabs our attention. Team Flight Brothers is certainly one of those groups. TFB is arguably the best freestyle dunk crew in the world right now. Check out a sneak peak of their upcoming DVD, all shot in HD.

This is a weekly feature in which we’ll give it up to the hottest freestyle video of the week.

This week was a tough one to make a decision, because there were so many great videos. Tommy Baker posted a new video with some of his best all-time highlights. Nero Bianco put up a nice video, which showed him using some breakdance moves, flexible moves, new two ball combos, and lightning fast asian style. Zephy caught a lot of people’s attention with his unique flow and by incorporating breakdance moves in his video.

All of these videos were amazing, but for this week the spot goes to Germany’s Surprise for his video “The Three Elements”. The video featured Surprise’s signature impossible trick variations, some smooth one ball flow, creative new spin combos, and some three ball freestyle. What really put the video over the top was the professional looking production and editing. Check out the pristine clarity, super clean slo-mos and a few surprise (no pun intended, haha) effects.

We’ll be posting some all time classic freestyle videos about every week or two. Get on your grind and you could get a classic on the front page of freestylecentral.com too!
